Stunning design and beautiful embroidery from Bengal, India. Chikan embroidery was originally worked by Muslim men for local markets but gradually the export market grew and vast quantities were produced for fichus, shawls, dresses for Western women. The embroidery is almost reversible.
The large square of fine muslin having two opposing corners with a large embroidered leaf and two flowers, filled with drawn threadwork in intricate design, surrounded by a variety of small flowers, all worked with a tambour needle in white cotton, the borders with large leaves filled with French knots or a variety of drawn threadwork patterns, the very edge scalloped.
34 in 87 cm square.
Very very good. Fresh and beautiful. Near one embroidered corner there is an 3 cm L shaped old darn. There is also a very minor pulling of the muslin on the other side of the embroidered corner.
