Kashmir Shawl Border
1820s

The forked tips on the boteh are a definitive Sikh period motif. This border would look stunning mounted onto a stretcher and hung or traditionally framed. Woven from the softest pashmina with a bold design. This has been cleaned and is from a collector.

Description

The end border woven with six simple and narrow botehs, each emerging from a leafy stem, their tips gently bending, filled with bold stylised flowerheads, surrounded by a chain of flowerheads, the infill with scattered vases of flowers, all below a guard stripe and a narrower border above with nine slanting small botehs, on a scarlet ground with indigo, saffron, green and natural colours.

43 x 19 1/2 in; 1.10 x 50 cm.

Condition

The side narrow borders which were very damaged have been stitched by hand under the border. The back has seven very small patches used to support minor damage on the face of the shawl.  Once mounted onto a stretcher these would not show.
