Pheonix Skirt
Last quarter 19th c

This is one of the most beautifully embroidered skirts I have seen. The stitches and exquisite and the Peking knots are extremely small, the silks beautifully selected to go with the lovely aquamarine ground. Ideal to wear with a jacket or blouse.

Description

in aquamarine satin, the front and back panels embroidered with the bird with exotic tail feathers, some worked in fine Peking knots, perched on the branch of a flowering peony tree, above waves, the back panel plain, sides pleats each with a small pheonix, peaches, peonies above wave border, the lower waves in Peking knots, using highly glossy floss silks, a little gold wrapped silk couching, edged with hand woven narrow braids in blue, black and silver silks, the waistband of indigo cotton.

Condition

Very good. There is a slight slight mark to silk on the back panel. The indigo panel is possibly not original to this skirt. Basically it is too short in length and the side pleats of the skirt have been bunched up. Needs another waist band making. The side pleats are coming undone at the top and have stitching showing. If a jacket was worn or a blouse with this skirt, none of this would show.
