Marvellous and very unusual hand block printed linen with sprays of coloured flowers and simple black sprays. Notice the zigzag pattern on the third type of spray. The jacket is of an unusual simple cut with marvellous back shaping. Each panel has been bound in silk and then sewn together. French.The Artisanne and the Bastidanne most commonly wear the bodice or corset which is pinned shut across the front*.
Provenance , it was owned by the seller's father who was an Interior Designer in France.
The short linen jacket with a foldover front, edged with green/blue silk to the neck and front closure, long tapering sleeves with thick rouleau trim at the shoulders, foldback cuffs and double green silk edging to under sleeve, the back with two panels, and two gusset sides, all bound with double green/blue silk, all cut to flare out, the outer surfaces with light green quiltding. Lined and quilted with same silk
The linen fabric with sprays of large madder flowers and smaller aubergine ranuculus type flowers, further sprays with inked markings of flowers, the third with aubergine/brown buds on a background of inked zigzags.
The linen is generally a very little marked, after all it is very old. There is a slgiht mend to the lower left hand side of the jacket 2 x 1/2 in; 5 x 1cm area. The back has some slight markings and on the back of the right hand sleeve there is a brown mark 2 x 1 in; 5 x 2 cm. The green/blue silk round the neck and front closure shows signs of wear, as do the cuff turnbacks. Similarly a little wear to the inside silk hem area to one flap and to little area at hem. Do ask for photos if you cannot see.
