Or dress wellingtons. These very elegant boots are quite amazing in that they would have not lasted very long. The delicately woven silk socks are backed with pink leather. They had the appearance of a smart dress pump. Fashioned from Moroccan leather James Devlin in The Shoemaker writes ' some have green legs, some purple, some yellow, some made of black Spanish and some of white grain calf' * The wellington was originally named after Arthur Wellesley, who becamed the first Duke of Wellington, winning many battle including the Battle fo Waterloo in 1815.
You will notice one heel is higher than the other. Presumably the gentleman wearer had one leg shorter than the other.
The black leather shoe with flat toes, grosgrain bows and low heels, the lacey and embroidered black silk socks supported at the top by a deep pink leather band, leather soles, the interior lined with pink leather and with twill weave linen pull ons.
Length 11 in; 28 cm.
In remarkable condition considereing how fine the silk stockings are. Clearly worn, but perhaps indoors. The left shoe has a little wear to the back area. The silk stocking has breaks above the ribbon. The right shoes has a few marks to the heel area and couple of very small breaks to the silk stocking.
