One of the collection of decorative rattan hats from Borneo, Malaysia. This design is called Siung Papar, made in the district of Papar by the Kadazan people and currently, there are only three known makers left. The oldest is over 90s years old. Highly decorative. Would look great on a wall.
Of conical shape, the top with a circle of ratan, all covered in a red trellis with patterned black squares, the rim with red painted rattan.
Very good.
My thanks to Jesse Joy for the information. Jesse is writing a booklet on sun hats made by the indigenous peoples of Sabah.
