Apart from being very beautiful, this skirt length is very interesting because there are two faults in the weave at the top. I wonder what happened to the weaver.
It is tempting to suggest this was designed by Anna Maria Garthwaite, Spitalfields prolific designer, but as she produced 80 designs a year, it is entirely probable that she did design this lovely piece. It is similar to others she created.
Probably designed by Anna Maria Garthwaite, two central colourful sprays of flowers, lying in opposite directions, flanked in large flower sprigs to the outer edges including tulips, in shades of deep pink, red, yellow, blue and green, on an ivory ground self woven with stripes, Rococo C scroll ribbons and small flower sprays.
3ft 4 in x 19 1/4 in; 1 m x 49 cm selvedge to selvedge.
1 full repeat.
The errors to the top could be cut off, but actually these faults make it rather interesting. Unpicked from a dress. A few minor marks. Ask for photos.
