Woven Paisley Shawl
c 1855

An unusual centre on this very nice quality shawl, which is imitating a Kashmir shawl.

Description

The central concave ivory square with stylised trees above columns and delicate flowers in C scrolls encroaching on the centre, each corner with a circle with a stylised flower, the two deep ends with elongated mehrabs or arches filled with large flower filled leaves, with small arches, linked medallions, the two sides similar but with foliage in wider arches, the borders with a repeat design of medallions, epaulette borders to each end and fringing, woven in wool and silk in red, pink, mid green, turquoise and black.

11ft 5 in x 5ft 43 in; 2.5 x 1.65 m

Condition

Very very good. The centre has a small 1.5 x .5 cm hole and a large headed pin hole above.  One end has a couple of slit holes and the other end a few more. One really only sees these when held to the light. These could be patched.
