Rare Military Sash
Early 19th c?

The original idea for sashes was to carry a wounded officer off the battlefield. Originally they were made of sprang which allowed the sash to expand width wise, to make stretcher. 18th century portraits frequently show officer's wearing crimson sashes.


Cataloguing

The crimson finely knitted double silk length, caught with a silk plaited loop 1 in; 2.5 cm, each end caught into a silver plaited tassel with coiled silver strands.

Condition

There is one very very small piece out of the side. See photo. The tassels are slightly tarnished.
