Rare Suffragette Skirt
c 1910

Great fabric!  Clearly this skirt was sewn in a hurry by a very amateur woman! There is a contrast between the well made horizontal panels on the lower skirt and the appaling machine stitching. I am not sure what the fabric is but think a wool/cotton mix. It is quite springy. The skirt has since been shortened from the waist.

Cataloguing

A simple fold-over fabric waistband, secured at centre back with a large hook and eye, the front of the skirt with flat front, the back with flat pleating, the lower skirt with professionally worked panels with narrow horizontal pleating, alternating with vertically joined panels with the fabric laid in V shapes, the hem with flat pleating, all in purple, green and white ribbed wool/cotton mix.

Length 26 1/2 in; 68 cm

Waist 38 in; 97 cm

Condition

Damage to the lower back opening. Appaling machine sewing throughout. The odd seam coming undone, which can easily be resewn.  A little fading to the hem area. The skirt has since been shortened from the waist.
