Gentleman's Shoes
1820s

The term 'being a square' comes from the eighteenth century 'square toes' meaning out of date or old fashioned shoes. This term was directed at unfashionable men who were still wearing square toes when they had long gone out of fashion.*

Cataloguing

Of black glacé leather with elongated front, very square toes, latchets edged and tied with crimson silk, the tongue wide and exagerated, Moroccan leather heel, lined with crimson tafetta silk, leather soles.

Heel to toe 11 in; 28 cm.

Condition

The eyelet holes have been stamped from the leather. In very good condition. They need shaping and support. There are a few scuffs and very small areas of wear. The inside backs of both have a little wear and the outside back of one has come undone. Nothing a conservator could'nt do.
