Chinese Summer Robe
Late 19th c
A Pao worn in the summer for informal wear with a very light silk under robe by Manchu women. The embroidery in pretty shades to complliment the turquoise silk ground, is almost reversible. The buttons were missing from the robe but I have located five chased brass circular examples, which are exactly the type which would have been on the robe. These are included in the price.
Cataloguing
The turquoise full length silk gauze ground finely embroidered with with black and white butterflies flitting amongst small roundels of narsissi, in pale lime green, pale and mid blue, peach, terracotta, ivory and black silks, the jui bordersto the top and sides of the robe in black ground silk gauze embroidered with prunus and butterflies in similar colours, edged with a hand woven braids, one narrow with mauve, blue and green and a wider yellow with green, mauve and blue, the cuffs with similar embroidery and braid.
Condition
The main body of the robe is in very good condition. There are couple of light marks to the flap over area, to the top left hand side of the robe, as you look at it. The wide black neck area has some damage, but this could be supported behind the gauze and really not notice. Ask for photos.
