Chenille Embroidered

The red and yellow chenille silk embroidery against the chocolate brown silk satin is stunning. The bodice has been altered. See Condition report below. This dress would be a good conservation project.

Cataloguing

The deep scoop neck embroidered with red and yellow chenille trailing flowers and leaves, short sleeves with similar deocration, bust darts, high waist, the embroidery trailing down the front and around the trained hem, the back opening with a silk tie to the top, then seven sets of embroidered eyelet holes to the waist, the front skirt straight but with pleating to the back skirt.

Bust 34 in;  87 cm;

Front shoulder to hem 55 in;  1.4 m

Back shoulder to trained hem 65 in; 1.68 m

Condition

The bodice has been altered ie the neckline and darts. Although all the embroidery has been directly worked onto the satin ground, that round the neck, the front and sides, has been cut and been put back onto the bodice.   The embroidery on back bodice is fine, having been sewn directly onto the satin. The rest of the embroidery on the dress has similarly been worked onto the satin ground. The bust darts have been let out. All this was probably for amateur dramatics.

Underarm the silk has discoloured. A few inches of a side seam has come undone, but with a few stitches could be rectified. To the front left skirt 9in; 23 cm from waist there is a 2 1/2 x 4  in; 7 x 10 cm area of slight discolouration, almost as if a sticky label has been put there. A little spotting to the front skirt, which is dye discolouration.
